86. Practical Boundary Setting w/Jill Miller

One of the best ways we can build healthy boundaries is by setting ourselves up for success with a regular time with Jesus and dive into the Word of God. In Part 2 of Healthy Boundaries Jill Miller from Teacher Be Still reviews the power of learning to hear God's voice through connecting with His Word-- learning to discern His voice and follow His leading. She then leads us into a series of practical boundaries we can set for ourselves to make sure we're taking a Sabbath, keeping ourselves away from correcting EVERY bit of student work, bringing home work every night, and being so consumed with our "to do" lists that we don't put our relationships with others first.
 
Making sure we have health in our own families at home requires that we don't work all afternoon, or evening, and that taking time to be present is key. Jill encourages us to use her 3 part power to do list to hone in on the most important tasks for the day, and only adding to it if we can successfully accomplish any additional items. She also encourages us to celebrate finishing items... "because our "to do" list will never be done... and that is ok!" Thank you, Jesus, that you help us say, "no!" is another important boundary that has to be practiced and followed to mean anything to us or those around us. 84. Check the Facts w/Amber Auger

Amber Auger from Beacon of Light joins us this week to discuss the incredible Check the Facts Curriculum they've created, released, and use as an educational tool in public, private, and homeschools across the U.S. Beacon of Light offers a totally unique, comprehensive sexual health curriculum that is free from the over-sexualized content and unbalanced messaging typically found in standard school curricula.
 
Check the Facts Curriculum program is designed to give students fact-based, balanced education on sexual health without promoting risky behaviors. Beacon of Light's Mission is to prevent the lifelong emotional, physical, and relational consequences of engaging in sexual activity at a young age. We do this by providing fact-based education that empowers teens to make informed, healthy decisions. We use a 10-day curriculum called Check the Facts in public schools.

82. Truthtelling is Self-Care w/Bekah Hutchinson

To wrap up our self-care podcast series this week Jesica Glover invites us into the center of one of her Christian teacher community conversations-- and this week it happens to be with 2nd Grade teacher Bekah Hutchinson from SW Washington. Bekah invites us into her own experience of truth-telling which really hit home this summer when she attended a Christian Educators Leadership retreat where Jamie and Donna Winship invited a group of teachers into some identity exchange experiences with Jesus. This powerful time of encounter has continued for her as she's allowed the Lord to show her who he sees her to be and to allow herself to tell the truth in response-- often called confession. The process, for Bekah (and Jesica), has been powerfully freeing and has proven to minister deeply to their hearts, thus deemed a good took for self-care. Bekah even says, "I think truthtelling the highest form of selfcare." 
 
Our prayer is that our candid conversation would draw you into a deeper personal relationship with the Lord in which you can ask Him who He calls you to be and that in knowing your true identity and continuing to seek out His thoughts toward you (see Jeremiah 29:11 among many others!)-- that you're own heart would overflow with the truth that sets you free (see John 8:32)!

81. Awakening Teacher Hearts

Get Ready to be encouraged... and welcomed into an AWAKE Experience coming to your area SOON! Heather Kohnen, Christian Educators Awake Experience Coordinator, joins us this week to continue our unit of Teacher Heartcare by encouraging us to connect with the faith community, dig into our true identity--- identifying lies and replacing with the truth, and holding onto the realities of we do have faith rights in our schools; yes, even in this hour! As it might be seemingly growing darker this is when the lights grow brighter! But we need to "go" with one another as we enter into an upgrade of "not just surviving, but thriving" as Heather says, as we gather together to recharge, encounter God's presence and voice, and hear real testimonies that will encourage our teacher hearts to run this race with perseverance.

Often we don't take time to listen to our hearts, and while serving our students is a daily passion, we must stop to care for our own hearts so we can be good stewards of those under our care. 78. Self-Care Part 2 w/Counselor Jessica Klika

Jessica Klika returns to give us some more practicals for grounding, regulation, remaining in the present, and focusing on slowing down as educators. She talks a bit about identifying our needs with acronym H.A.L.T.S.-- where we ask ourselves am I Hungry, Angry, Lonely, Tired, or Stressed, right now? Identifying what we need and then seeking to meet those needs is our goal our healthy teachers.
 
Jessica recommends educators read "Ruthless Elimination of Hurry" by John Mark Comer as she says that "we really need to hone in and give attention to rest because slowing down is the key to remaining in the present, which is our goal."

77. Self-Care w/Counselor Jessica Klika

In the middle of our "Teacher Self-Talk" podcast unit former middle school teacher gone counselor, Jessica Klicka, shares some tips and tricks for keeping ourselves well inside and out. As we all know teachers can be notorious for putting off their own needs for those of others, but is this really the right thing to do in the long run? Ignoring the signs our bodies are sending us can lead to some serious health issues all around... so we're needing to tune into the signs our bodies are sending us and regularly checking in with our emotional state to keep us in the healthy lane. It's super important that we're regularly filling our buckets (needs): physical, emotional, and spiritual. After all we are no good as Kingdom Educators to our students (or our educational community, at large) if we're constantly running on empty, right?! Setting healthy boundaries, taking breaks, and utilizing restorative practices are keys to breaking free of the stress cycle that eat at our Kingdom impact, and the JOY of partnering with Jesus in our classrooms. 
 
Jessica Klika comes to us from Cornerstone Christian Counseling out of Boulder Colorado, however she counsels online from her Florida home. God led Mrs. Klicka, a former middle school teacher of 8 years into the world of counseling. Because she's so familiar with the many unique challenges we face in our classrooms, Jessica is a perfect asset to this professional development type episode. We pray this episode encourages you by giving you a "hand up"-- so that you're able to increase your own health by listening to what you need and following up to meet your own needs.
